Pass the Plate

Monuments

They quoted "turn the other cheek," then turned the screws,
Washed feet on camera, then charged for the pews.
Blessed are the meek, but the board blessed the strong,
Passed the plate twice; made the psalm play along.
Sermon said serve, so they served you a fee,
Love went live on the feed; receipts went overseas.

"No compulsion," they said, with a contract in hand,
Faith came free, then the fee took the land.
Zakat means cleanse; clean-handed trusts hoard,
Trustees faced qibla, then gated the poor.
Right speech on the banner, wrong reach in the books,
Silent retreats with the predator hooks.
Buddha left a palace; they built one in his name,
Sold non-attachment with a trademarked flame.

Camel through the needle, but the needle got sold,
Threaded gold through the gate, called the greed good as gold.
"Justice, justice," then just-us got paid,
Scales kissed the thumb, called the balance a trade.
Prayer hands folded, then folded the cash,
Ashes to assets, dust written off as tax.

Hey Judas, don't make it bad,
Take a sad psalm and sell it back as an ad.
They used the Word to own the world in code,
Then sold the poor back what the poor were owed.
They preached the path, then put a toll on the road,
Blessed the bread, then bred hunger they owned.
The shepherd got shares, the flock got fleeced,
Called it peace while they auctioned the priest.

Thank you for the hunger,
Thank you for the hunger,
THANK YOU FOR THE HUNGER...
Now pass the plate.
