Let's Take A Break

Monuments

You were the object of my affection, I objected to your subjection.
My subject changed, now the object is rejection.
You wanted to possess me, now I possessive get,
The apostrophe of us? It only marks what we let
Go. The comma in our sentence turned us into "coma",
A pause that lasted too long, now the grammar of us is over.

You said you needed space, so I gave you galaxies,
But you orbit every planet except the one you had with me.
Distance makes the heart grow fonder, funny, I grew fonder of the distance,
Now I'm far from over you, but "over you" is my position.

I hung up on you, but you were still hung up in my closet,
Every thread you left behind, I wear it like I lost it.
You drafted me in your love, then left me in the cold draft,
Sent a text that sentenced us, that sentence never got passed.

See, I put a period on us, but you turned it to ellipsis,
Three dots meaning "there's more," but more of this is hellish.
You said I was too tense. Present, past, I'm always future-less,
I case the joint we built, but there's no case for what you did.

I broke down when you broke up, I'm broke but I'm breaking even,
Even broke things break, and I'm breaking what I believe in.
You withdrew before the fall, then fell before I caught you,
Autumn left, the leaves all left, I'm left to leaf through what you taught me.

I check your checks, you checked out, mate. Chess move, I'm a pawn now,
You took my rook, you rook me still, I still look for your car now.
Parked outside my self-control, I control-alt-deleted us,
But the shift never changed, I'm just a key you used to press when

Caps lock held your voice down, now you speak in lower case,
You used to be my upper hand, now I can't hold your face.
You played me like a record, now the record shows I'm skipping,
I needle you in my thoughts, but the needle's only ripping

What we groove to pieces. Pieces of what? Peace. We
Had it once, you piece of work, you worked me piece by piece. See,
I'm piecing it together, you're a puzzle I can't figure,
Seven figures couldn't figure how you figured I was bigger

Than the picture, but you cropped me, I'm the crop you harvested,
You reap what you sow, well I sowed us up, now I'm the harvest.

I held you when you were falling, falling is what held me.
You caught my eye, I caught your lies, the catch is what expense sees.
The interest in our account? I lost interest, you counted on me.
You're the principal problem, I'm principal of what we won't be.

You said you needed closure, so I closed the door and boarded it.
Now you're bored, you're bored of it, you bored a hole and poured in it
All the salt that you saved. Saved? No, you spent it all on wounds,
The wounds I lick are liquor now, the liquor makes me loom

Large in your rearview, but the view is rear at best,
I'm behind you but you're behind on all the love you confessed.
You played the field, now the field plays you, you're outfield, I'm benched,
You stole home, now you're homeless, I'm the home that you torched.

I flame still, I'm still flame, I'm a wick that you shortened,
You shorted all my stock, now I'm stock-still and mortgaged.
The interest compounded daily, I'm daily compounded by you,
You're a drug I can't dose, you overdosed what we knew.

Object of affection, objected to subjection,
Subject changed, object is rejection.
Possess me, possessive, apostrophe what we let go.
Comma turned coma, grammar of us is over.

I turned the page, the page turned me, turnabout's fair play.
You played me for a fool, now foolish plays don't play.
I face the music, music faces me, I face value over face time.
You Facetimed facing facts, but facts face off with your fake lines.
Which witch wristwatch switched? You switched. I watched warily, weaving westward,
Snapshots scratched, scattered, splintering, I shed the shards, I shove off.
I lightened up the load, the load lightened up my path.
You charged me up, I charge it off, the charge don't hold no charge,
I discharge every dis you charged, discharged, I charge ahead.
